Cut every PDF page into halves or quarters
Drop in a PDF and choose how to divide each page: left and right halves (1×2), top and bottom halves (2×1), or four quarters (2×2). Each piece becomes its own page in a new PDF, emitted in reading order — left to right, then top to bottom, or right to left for books that read that way. This is the inverse of N-up page imposition: it is the fast way to turn a scanned book spread, where two facing pages were captured on one sheet, back into separate single pages, or to explode a 2-up handout or a contact sheet into its individual pages.
Private and client-side
Everything runs in your browser with pdf-lib, so your PDF is never uploaded to a server and even confidential scans stay on your device. Each cell is embedded from the original rather than re-rendered, so text stays selectable and vector graphics stay crisp at any zoom. The cut starts in the middle, but a scanned spread’s fold rarely lands there — so you can drag the cut line directly onto the fold on a preview of your own page, or set it by percentage, and the pieces need not be equal. For books that read right to left, such as manga, the right-hand piece can be emitted first.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between 1×2, 2×1 and 2×2?
1×2 cuts each page down the middle into a left half and a right half. 2×1 cuts it across the middle into a top half and a bottom half. 2×2 cuts both ways into four quarters, output as top-left, top-right, bottom-left, bottom-right. So a 10-page PDF becomes 20 pages at 1×2 or 2×1, and 40 pages at 2×2. The cut defaults to the middle of the page but can be dragged anywhere between 5% and 95%, so the two pieces need not be equal halves.
Is this the opposite of N-up or 2-up?
Yes. N-up places several pages onto one sheet, while this splits one sheet back into several pages. Use 1×2 to reverse a side-by-side 2-up scan, or 2×2 to reverse a 4-up sheet.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. The whole split runs locally in your browser with pdf-lib. Your file never leaves your device, and the tool keeps working offline.
