Reporting something that is broken

What makes a report actionable:

• A file that shows it, if you can share one. Tools break on particular documents, not in general — a PDF whose fonts are subset oddly, a CSV saved as EUC-KR, a HEIC from a specific phone. Send the smallest copy that still breaks, with anything personal taken out; a file is never required.
• Which tool, and what you clicked. "Merge PDF, four files, the third one came out blank" is enough to start.
• Your browser and platform. The same tool can behave differently in Safari and Chrome.

If the file is confidential, say so and describe what is unusual about it instead — how many pages, whether it is a scan, whether it came from a form, which language. That is often enough to reproduce it with a document of our own. What you send is read to look into what you reported;the privacy policy says how email is handled.

Asking for a tool

Requests are welcome, and the thing worth writing is the job rather than the tool: "I get bank statements as PDFs and need the tables in a spreadsheet" says more than "add a PDF-to-Excel converter", because sometimes what you need already exists here under a name you would not have searched for.

Nothing here runs on a server of ours, so a job that needs one — sending mail, storing files between visits, calling a paid API — will not be built here.

What we cannot do

• Recover a file. Nothing you open is uploaded, so there is no copy on any server. The privacy policy has the details.
• See what went wrong on your machine. No analytics of ours records what you did in a tool, which is why the description in your message is all there is to work from.
• Give legal, financial, medical or tax advice. The calculators are arithmetic, and the terms say plainly that they are not advice.

Everything else

Licensing, corrections, takedown requests and press questions go to the same address. If you are writing about how your data is handled, the privacy policy andthe about page may already answer it; the about page shows two ways to check for yourself that nothing is uploaded.
