Photos taken on a phone or camera often carry EXIF metadata: the camera make and model, the lens, the exposure, the exact date and time, orientation, and frequently your GPS location. Drop a photo in (or paste the address of one) and this tool reads that metadata and shows it — with a link that opens the coordinates on a map, and a warning that the photo pinpoints where it was taken. "Show all fields" lists every EXIF, XMP and IPTC field the file carries, not a chosen few. Then download a clean copy with all metadata stripped, safe to share publicly.
Not only JPEG
A JPEG-only reader handed a PNG would answer "no EXIF", which reads as "this file has nothing hidden in it" — a claim about a file it never looked at. This one identifies the container first: JPEG (EXIF, XMP, IPTC), PNG (tEXt/iTXt text chunks, pHYs resolution, tIME, and a full EXIF block in an eXIf chunk), WebP, TIFF and TIFF-based camera RAW, HEIC/HEIF and AVIF, GIF and BMP. When it meets a container it cannot walk — a video, say — it says so by name instead of reporting an empty result.
Unlike sites that make you upload the image, this reads and re-encodes the photo entirely in your browser — nothing is ever sent to a server, which is exactly what you want when the whole point is privacy. That includes the map: the coordinates go to OpenStreetMap only if you click the link.
Frequently asked questions
Does removing metadata change how the photo looks?
No visible change — the copy keeps the file’s own format: a PNG is re-encoded as a lossless PNG, a JPEG as a high-quality JPEG. Only the hidden EXIF/GPS data is removed, not the picture.
Can it remove GPS location from a photo?
Yes. Downloading the clean copy strips all EXIF including GPS, so the new file no longer reveals where the photo was taken.
Can I see where the photo was taken?
Yes. When the file carries GPS data the tool shows the decimal coordinates, the altitude, the direction the camera faced and the speed it was moving, with a "View on map" link. The link opens OpenStreetMap in a new tab — the coordinates leave your browser only if you click it.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The photo is read and re-encoded entirely in your browser — it never leaves your device. A URL you paste is fetched by your browser too, which is why a site that blocks cross-origin reads will refuse it.
Which files are supported?
JPEG, PNG, WebP, TIFF (including TIFF-based RAW such as DNG and CR2), HEIC/HEIF, AVIF, GIF and BMP are read. A PNG is not just "a JPEG with no EXIF": its tEXt/iTXt chunks, its pHYs resolution and any eXIf block are read and shown. The clean-copy download is offered for the formats a browser can re-draw (JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF) and writes the copy in the file’s own format — JPEG, PNG or WebP; GIF, BMP and AVIF, which a browser can draw but cannot write, come back as a lossless PNG, and so does a WebP on Safari and the browsers on an iPhone or iPad, which cannot write WebP.
Can I see every field, not a summary?
Yes. "Show all fields" lists every entry of every IFD — IFD0, the Exif and GPS sub-IFDs, the interoperability IFD and the thumbnail IFD — plus scraped XMP properties, IPTC datasets and the PNG or WebP chunks, with their raw names.
