PDF to Word (DOCX)
Convert a PDF to an editable Word .docx — headings, bold, italic and lists worked out from the type, with anything left behind listed. Free, no upload.
Drop a PDF here or click to browse
🔒 Processed in your browser — never uploaded. Headings, bold, italic and lists are worked out from the size, font and position of the text, because a PDF stores no structure of its own.
Turn a PDF into an editable Word document
Drop in a PDF and this tool pulls out its text layer, reflows it into paragraphs, and packages it as a standard Word .docx you can open and edit in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice, or Apple Pages. The whole conversion runs in your browser — your file is never uploaded to a server, so even confidential contracts and reports stay on your device.
Editable text, not a pixel-perfect copy
This reads the words out of the PDF and rebuilds their structure as far as the file honestly allows. Headings are recognised from the type size, and from a lone bold line standing on its own; bold and italic from the font each run is set in; bulleted and numbered lists from the marker that was printed and how far the line is indented. Headings become real Word heading styles — three levels of them — so they show up in the navigation pane and in a table of contents you generate. A numbered list keeps the numbers the PDF actually printed rather than being renumbered from one. What cannot come across is named on the page before you download: pages with no selectable text at all, how many images are being left behind and on which pages, and pages laid out in columns whose rows will arrive as ordinary lines rather than a Word table. Exact fonts, colours, page size and clickable links are never carried over, and repeated headers and footers are left out unless you untick them in the list the tool shows. The extracted document is shown on the page first, so you can see what you are getting before the file downloads. A scanned PDF that is only images of pages has no text to extract and needs OCR first.
Frequently asked questions
Will the .docx look exactly like my PDF?
No, but a good deal more than plain text comes across. Headings, bold and italic, and bulleted or numbered lists are rebuilt from the size, font and position of the text, with headings written as real Word heading styles. Tables it recognises become Word tables and pictures it can read are placed where they sat; exact fonts, colours, page size and clickable links are not carried, columns not recognised as a table arrive as ordinary lines, and repeated headers and footers are left out unless you untick them. You see the extracted document on the page before you download it, together with a list of exactly what was left behind and on which pages.
Does it work on scanned PDFs?
Only as pictures. A scan has no selectable text, so each page picture the tool can read goes into the Word file with none of its words editable; only when it finds neither text nor a readable picture does it offer to read the words here. For editable words, open it in the PDF editor and choose "make the scanned words searchable" — it reads the pages on your device and lays the words back in as invisible text — then convert the result here.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. The PDF is read and the .docx is built entirely in your browser with JavaScript, so nothing is sent to a server and the tool keeps working offline.
