Turn any PDF into its colour negative
This tool rewrites the colour instructions inside the PDF rather than redrawing the pages, so a bright white document becomes a dark one while the words stay words — selectable, searchable and sharp. Black turns to white, white to black, every colour is replaced by its opposite, and the paper itself is painted dark so the page is readable rather than white-on-white. Photographs, which carry their colour in pixels rather than instructions, are converted separately and counted for you. The result is far easier on the eyes for late-night reading, and on an e-ink or e-reader screen the boosted contrast can make faint scans more legible. Pages keep their original size in the rebuilt PDF.
Two ways to flip it
Keep the text is the default, and it is the one to use. Only the colour instructions the page is drawn with are rewritten, so every word stays selectable and searchable, links and bookmarks keep working, and the file does not grow. Photographs are flipped separately and counted for you, and any this browser cannot read are left in their original colours and reported rather than quietly passed through. If the PDF turns out to have no colour instructions at all — a flat scan, say — you are told so instead of being handed something unchanged. Re-draw every page is the second choice: each page is rendered as an image at a resolution you pick, with a live progress count and an estimated file size. That is certain to look exactly like the preview, but the result has no selectable text and is usually a much larger file, so it is for pages whose effects the first route cannot reach.
Private by design
Everything runs locally with pdf.js and pdf-lib, entirely in your browser, so your document is never uploaded to a server and the tool keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
Frequently asked questions
Will I still be able to select or search the text?
Yes, on the default setting. "Keep the text" rewrites only the colour instructions the page is drawn with, so the words stay words — selectable, searchable and sharp — and the links and bookmarks keep working. You lose the text layer only if you deliberately pick the second option, "Re-draw every page", which renders each page as an image.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. Whichever route you pick, all of it happens in your browser with pdf.js and pdf-lib, so your file never leaves your device and it keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
Why is the inverted PDF larger than the original?
On the default setting it should not be: "Keep the text" edits the colour instructions in place and leaves the size roughly where it was. It grows when you pick "Re-draw every page", because each page is then stored as a lossless PNG image to keep text edges crisp, and images are far bigger than the vector text and fonts they replace.
