What is a numeronym?

A numeronym is a word shortened to its first letter, the number of letters in between, and its last letter. So internationalization (20 letters) becomes i18n, accessibility becomes a11y, localization becomes l10n, and Kubernetes becomes k8s. These abbreviations are common in software, standards bodies, and developer chat because they keep a long term recognizable while being fast to type.

How this generator works

Type or paste any word or sentence and the tool builds the numeronym for every word longer than three letters, leaving short words, numbers, and punctuation untouched. It also shows a per-word breakdown so you can see exactly how each term was shortened. Everything runs locally in your browser — nothing is uploaded — so it works instantly and stays private.

Frequently asked questions

What is a numeronym?

A numeronym abbreviates a word using its first letter, the count of letters in between, and its last letter — for example internationalization becomes i18n and accessibility becomes a11y.

Which words get shortened?

Only words longer than three letters are turned into numeronyms. Words of three letters or fewer, along with numbers and punctuation, are left unchanged because abbreviating them would not make them shorter.
