Tip Calculator
Work out the tip, total and per-person amount for any bill, with quick 10–25% presets and bill splitting.
Leave tax empty if your prices already include it.
Rounds the total (bill + tax + tip) to the step below — a whole dollar, won or euro unless you pick a bigger one — and works the tip back from it; per person is the rounded total split, unless each share is rounded too.
| Tip % | Tip | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 10% | $5.00 | $55.00 |
| 15% | $7.50 | $57.50 |
| 18% | $9.00 | $59.00 |
| 20% | $10.00 | $60.00 |
| 25% | $12.50 | $62.50 |
How the tip is worked out
Enter the bill amount and a tip percentage — or tap one of the quick presets, named for the service they suit (Poor 10%, Average 15%, Good 18%, Great 20%, Excellent 25%) — and set how many people are splitting. The tool multiplies the bill by the percentage to get the tip, adds it to the bill for the total, and divides by the number of people so everyone knows exactly what to pay. It updates instantly as you type, so you can compare a 15% and a 20% tip — and "The same bill at each tip" lays every preset out side by side under the answer. The "Currency" picker writes every figure as money in the currency you choose, and "Reset" puts every field back to how the page opens. Tick "The amount already includes the tip — work out the bill before it" and the amount box becomes "Amount paid, tip included": the tool works the "Bill before tip" back out of a settled total, with the tax and the before- or after-tax choice taken into account, and runs everything else on that bill. Print opens the browser's print dialog, which can also save a PDF, with the bill, the tax, the tip, the totals and the table of every preset.
How much should you tip?
Tipping norms vary by country and service. In the United States, 15–20% at sit-down restaurants is typical, with 18–20% common for good service; many people round up for simplicity. Some places add an automatic gratuity for large groups, in which case an extra tip is optional. Whether you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total is a personal choice — tipping on the pre-tax amount gives a slightly smaller tip.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the US, 15–20% is the usual range for table service, with 18–20% for good service. Norms differ by country, so adjust for where you are — some places include service in the bill.
How do I split the bill with a tip?
Enter the number of people and the tool divides the tip-inclusive total evenly, showing the amount each person owes and each person's share of the tip.
Do you store the amounts I enter?
No. The tip and split are calculated entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded or saved.
Can it handle tax, rounding, or people who ordered different amounts?
Yes. Add tax as an amount or a percentage and tip on the bill before or after it. Round the total or each person's share to a step you choose, and tick the option to split by what each person ordered; the tip per person is shown too.
Can I compare tips, pick a currency or start over?
Yes. Each preset names the service it suits — Poor, Average, Good, Great, Excellent — and "The same bill at each tip" puts every preset side by side under the answer, with the same tax, rounding and split. The "Currency" picker writes every figure as money in the currency you choose, and "Reset" puts every field back to how the page opens.
Can it work out the bill from a total that already includes the tip?
Yes. Tick “The amount already includes the tip — work out the bill before it”, type what was paid into “Amount paid, tip included”, and the page shows the “Bill before tip”, taking any tax and the before- or after-tax choice into account; the tip, the split and the comparison table are then worked from that bill.
