Grade Calculator — Test Score % and Final Grade Needed
Turn correct answers into a percentage and letter grade, work out the score you need on the final, or weight a list of assignments into one grade.
Score = correct ÷ total × 100 = 45 ÷ 50 × 100 = 90%

Test scores, finals and weighted grades
Test score mode turns the number correct out of the total into a percentage and a letter grade — the classic "EZ grader" for marking quizzes and exams. Final grade needed mode answers "what do I need on the final?": enter your current grade, how much the final is worth, and your target, and it returns the exact score you need. Weighted grade adds up a list of assignments — each a percentage or points out of a total, such as 45/50, with its own weight — into one grade; the weights do not have to add up to 100%, and a line under the result says whether they do and, if not, what the result then means. It can also drop the lowest of the rows you mark, sharing that row's weight among the other marked rows, or grade a points class as all the points earned over all the points possible.
How the grades work
Percentages map to letters on the common US scale (A ≥ 90, B ≥ 80, C ≥ 70, D ≥ 60, otherwise F) unless you change it under "Change the letter scale", which also has a plus/minus switch; the "Letter scale" line under the result spells out the scale in use. The final-grade formula solves target = current × (1 − weight) + final × weight, and flags when a target is out of reach or already secured; for a final in parts, “The final is in parts” works out what the parts still to sit need. Under each answer the formula is written out with your own numbers in it; “Decimal places” fixes how many places every answer, the chart and the copied text carry, where Auto keeps each figure's own rounding; and for a test marked in halves, “Half marks” makes the correct and wrong boxes and the grading chart go in half points. Everything runs in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a test grade?
Divide the number correct by the total questions and multiply by 100. 45 correct out of 50 is 90%, an A.
What score do I need on my final?
Enter your current grade, the final's weight and your target. The tool solves for the exact final score — and tells you if even 100% falls short.
Can I change the letter-grade cutoffs?
Yes. Open "Change the letter scale" and type the percentage each of A, B, C and D starts from; each has to sit below the one above it, and until it does the standard US scale is kept. The same panel has a "Plus/minus grades (A+, A, A−…)" switch, and the "Letter scale" line under the result always shows the scale in use.
Can I enter the number wrong, or see every possible score at once?
Yes to both. In Test score mode the "Wrong answers" box works in place of "Correct answers" — whichever you typed last counts, and the other follows the total. Below the score, the "Grading chart" lists every number wrong from none to all, with the number correct, the percentage and the letter, and "Copy chart" and "Print chart" take the table on its own. The chart is drawn for a whole number of questions, up to a limit the page names.
Can I work out my grade after the final, or type a letter instead of a percentage?
Yes. In Final grade needed mode, “Work out” also offers “My overall grade — I took the final”, which uses your “Score on the final (%)” — above 100 counts, for extra credit — and “How much the final is worth”, which finds the weight that takes your current grade to the target. Beside “Needed on final”, two tiles give your grade “With 0% on the final” and “With 100% on the final”. The current and target boxes take a letter such as B+ as well as a percentage, read as the lowest percentage that earns it on the scale in use, and a line underneath says what it was read as.
Can it handle half marks, or show how the grade was worked out?
Yes. Tick “Half marks” under the test boxes and the correct and wrong answers count in halves, with the grading chart in half-mark rows. Under each answer a line writes the formula out with your numbers — the test score, the score needed on the final, the overall grade, the weight, or the weighted sum term by term.
Can it drop my lowest score?
Yes. In Weighted grade mode tick “Drop the lowest score among the rows marked droppable”, then tick “Can be dropped” on the rows that may go — the quizzes, say. The lowest of them as a percentage is left out, and its weight is shared among the other marked rows in proportion to their weights, so together they still count what they did and every other row keeps its weight. A line under the result names the row dropped and where its weight went.
My class counts points, not percentages. Can it add them up?
Yes. Set “Weights from” to “Points possible (a points class)” and type each grade as points out of a total, such as 45/50: the grade is all the points earned over all the points possible, so a long test counts for more than a short quiz. A row with no total is left out, and the page names it. Fill in “Points still to come” and “Target (%)” to see how many of those points you need.
My final is in parts. What do I need on the parts left?
In Final grade needed mode, open “The final is in parts”, give each part its share of the final and the score of any part you have sat, and leave the rest blank: the page gives what the parts still to sit need. The shares have to add up to 100 — they are never rescaled.
