What the pay periods mean
  • Weekly — paid once a week, 52 paydays a year.
  • Bi-weekly — paid every second week, usually on the same weekday: 26 paydays a year. Not the same as semi-monthly.
  • Semi-monthly — paid twice a calendar month, usually mid-month and on the last day: 24 paydays, so each is a little more than a bi-weekly one.
  • Monthly — paid once a month, 12 paydays a year.
  • Quarterly — paid once every three months, 4 paydays a year.

A straight rate conversion; taxes and deductions are not included.

Convert any pay rate

Type a figure in any pay period — hourly, daily, weekly, bi-weekly, semi-monthly, monthly, quarterly or annual, in the currency you pick — and see every other period at once. Answer questions like "$25 an hour is how much a year?" ($52,000 at 40 hours a week) without doing the arithmetic yourself. Everything runs in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded.

How it works

Your rate is reduced to an hourly wage using your hours per week (default 40) and weeks per year (default 52), then expanded to every period. Adjust those two inputs for part-time hours or unpaid weeks off. This is a straight rate conversion — it does not deduct income tax, social security or other withholdings, so figures are gross (before tax).

Hours past "Overtime after (hours / week)" are paid at the same rate as the rest unless you pick an overtime rate in "Overtime pay", and the page says what it did with them either way. Under the answers, "What the pay periods mean" says what each period is and how many paydays it has a year — bi-weekly and semi-monthly are not the same. Below an hour, “Per minute” and “Per second” give the rate for the smallest stretches of work, kept to enough significant figures that a fraction of a cent still shows.

Frequently asked questions

How is annual salary calculated from an hourly wage?

Annual = hourly × hours per week × weeks per year. At $25/hour, 40 hours a week and 52 weeks, that is $52,000 a year.

Does it include taxes?

No. It is a gross (pre-tax) rate conversion. Tax, deductions and benefits vary by country and situation, so they are not applied.

Can I use part-time hours?

Yes. Change the hours per week and weeks per year to match your schedule and every pay period updates instantly.

Can it allow for paid holidays and vacation?

Yes. Enter "Holidays / year" and "Vacation days / year" and a table of every pay period appears with an "Unadjusted" and a "Holidays & vacation adjusted" column. Hourly and daily pay is taken as the unadjusted figure — the days off go unpaid and the year shrinks — while weekly and longer pay is taken as adjusted: the days off are paid, so each day actually worked is worth more.

Does it count overtime?

Only if you say so. "Overtime pay" is straight time by default — every hour at the same rate — or an overtime rate you pick, applied to the hours past "Overtime after (hours / week)"; either way the page says what it did with the hours past the line.

Can it show pay per minute or per second?

Yes. “Per minute” and “Per second” sit under the other figures. They are kept to a few significant figures rather than cut to the currency's own decimals, which would erase them: $25 an hour is about $0.417 a minute and $0.00694 a second.
